To develop a fibreoptic condition monitoring system for the cargo containment system of Qmax LNG
A variant of the SmartCell FBG pressure transducer was developed that was suited to welding within the
containment system primary membrane and measurement of the dynamic pressure associated with the
cryogenic liquid sloshing during vessel motion. Prototype sensors were manufactured and tested for
their dynamic pressure response. Qualification of the welding of the sensors into the primary membrane
was carried out.
A method of measuring the dynamic compression of the secondary containment system at low
temperatures caused by sloshing impacts was developed. Qualification of the measurement was carried
out using dynamic load tests at low temperature.
