Project 'HULLMOS-II'  - Hull Monitoring System

Challenge


To develop monitoring techniques for hulls of catamarans and other fast craft constructed from lightweight materials such as aluminium or fiber-reinforced composites. To carry out full-scale measuring campaigns on pilot installations to verify system integrity and utility of data provided.

 

Resolution

Delivered:

  • Development of three sensor types - SmartPatch, SmartHull LGL and SmartHull SGL - suited to Hull monitoring applications.
  • Qualification of the SmartPatch sensor in laboratory tests was successfully made and disseminated.
  • The developed HULLMOS system was successfully demonstrated in live sea-trials on a high profile and very suitable test vessel, a composite military patrol boat.
  • The establishment of Smart Fibres as a leading UK supplier of fibreoptic hull stress monitoring systems
