Smart Fibres hull monitoring system selected by Kockums for Visby Corvette refit.



The Swedish Navy has a fleet of five Visby class corvettes that were first introduced in 2000.  The vessels use several innovative techniques to reduce radar and magnetic signatures and are constructed using composite materials to minimise weight.

The vessels are now entering a refit phase and Smart Fibres has been selected to supply a hull monitoring system using optical sensors for each of the five vessels.

The system is based on the successful SmartScan FBG Interrogator with additional facilities to suit the specialist Naval environmental requirements.  The sensors are special variants of standard Smart Fibres sensors modified to suit the application.

The first system will be delivered in Autumn 2011.
