Optical Fibre Sensing System
A typical system for the multi-point monitoring of strain, temperature or other measurands using FBGs generally comprises three discrete sub-systems

i) Sensor Network
A network of fibre Bragg grating sensors either embedded within or attached to the structural components being monitored

ii) Interrogation Unit
An optoelectronic unit which illuminates the sensor network and interrogates the optical reflection from each discrete sensor

iii) Processing Unit
An electronic unit, often in the form of a PC, which takes raw data from the optoelectronic interrogation unit and performs data processing, user interfacing and data transmission & storage functions.
