There are many areas of medical research and treatment that could benefit from the use of strain, pressure and temperature measurements but have been unable to do so with conventional sensors. For instance the miniature scale of optical fibers makes in-vivo pressure, temperature and strain sensing possible, and applications within high radiation zones where electrical sensors are inoperable can be addressed with passive fiber sensors.
