Brief:
To determine real time stresses and strains of critically loaded composite laminate structures through the use of fiber optic sensing technologies.

Delivered:
- A demonstration yacht equipped with a Smart 38m carbon fiber mast, instrumented with optical fiber sensors
- Advancement to the state of the art in the following:

  • Application of fiber Bragg grating technology
  • Embedment of optical fiber sensors
  • A commercial viable optical fiber strain sensing system
