Automotive
For the production car industry, the performance to weight ratio of structural components is a key design driver, and much development activity is carried out using new materials and alternative design methodologies. Sensors for design validation of scale models and prototype components on test rigs and within wind tunnels are critical components in a vehicle's development cycle.

The ability of optical fiber sensors to highly instrument a relatively small component without affecting its mechanical properties is finding wide application in the automotive industry. Thermal management of the components of a motor vehicle is also an exacting science, and the use of temperature sensing is extensive in new model developments.. Again, optical fiber sensing offers significant advantage over conventional technologies, with dozens or even hundreds of accurate point temperature measurements able to be made with a few optical fibers employing fiber Bragg grating sensors. Smart Fibres are working with key partners in the automotive industry to assist in the exploitation of these key advantages to production car and Motorsport vehicle developments.
